Huey p. newton and tyrone robinson8/15/2023 Based on a casual conversation, Seale became Chairman and Newton became Minister of Defense. During his time at Merritt College, Newton and Bobby Seale organized the Black Panther Party for Self Defense in October 1966. He read the works of Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Frantz Fanon, Malcolm X, Mao Zedong, Durkheim, and Che Guevara. He joined the Afro-American Association, became a prominent member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, Beta Tau chapter and played a role in getting the first African-American history course adopted as part of the college's curriculum. ![]() Newton once wrote that he began his law studies to become a better criminal, although he said that he had been a "big-time fool" for having such narrow ambitions.Īs a student at Merritt College in Oakland, Newton became involved in politics in the Bay Area. In Newton's autobiography Newton states "Most of all, I questioned what was happening in my own family and in the community around me." This is when Newton started learning what was really going on around him and was the start of his involvement in the civil rights movement. As a teenager, he was arrested several times for minor offenses, including gun possession and vandalism at age 14.Īfter Newton taught himself how to read he started questioning everything. Newton also attended Merritt college, San Francisco Law school, and the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he earn a bachelor's degree and then later earning a PhD there as well. He later taught himself to read, going on to read The Republic by Plato as his first book. Newton graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1959, without being able to read. All they did was try to rob me of the sense of my own uniqueness and worth, and in the process nearly killed my urge to inquire." Not one instructor ever awoke in me a desire to learn more or to question or to explore the worlds of literature, science, and history. "During those long years in Oakland public schools, I did not have one teacher who taught me anything relevant to my own life or experience. Growing up in Oakland, Newton stated that he was "made to feel ashamed of being black." In his autobiography, Revolutionary Suicide, he wrote, But he said his family was close-knit, and he never went without food and shelter as a child. The Newton family was quite poor and often relocated throughout the San Francisco Bay Area during Newton's childhood. In 1945, the family migrated to Oakland, California as part of the second wave of the Great Migration of African Americans out of the South to the Midwest and West. His parents named him after former Governor of Louisiana Huey Long. He was the youngest of seven children of Armelia Johnson and Walter Newton, a sharecropper and Baptist lay preacher. In 1989 he was shot and killed in Oakland, California. Newton spent time in prison for manslaughter due to his alleged involvement in a shooting that killed a police officer, but was later acquitted. He continued to pursue an education, eventually earning a Ph.D. Newton had a long series of confrontations with law enforcement, including several convictions, while he participated in political activism. ![]() Huey Percy Newton (Febru– August 22, 1989) was an African-American political activist and revolutionary who, along with Bobby Seale, co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966. Still even today the works an ideas of the prolific leader Huey P.Dr. In time the BPP was dismantled as it’s leaders were either killed, imprisoned or addicted to drugs. ![]() In the years leading up to Newton’s death, the BPP was under heavy ridicule from the powers that be and classified as a hate group. The Party’s political agenda included better housing, better jobs, and proper education for all Black people, which was all documented in their Ten-Point Program. The BPP achieved national and international recognition through their active role in the Black Liberation Movement and in politics dealing with race relations of the 1960s and 1970s. While Newton attended Merritt College in California, Newton and his comrade, Chairman Bobby Seale, organized the Black Panther Party for Self Defense in October 1966 with Huey as Minister of Defense. Born in born in Monroe, Louisiana February 17, 1942, Huey Newton attended the University of California, Santa Cruz and studied law attaining his Bachelor’s Degree and PhD.
